Overview

What is a landscape renovation?

A landscape renovation rebuilds an existing yard from the ground up: demolition, drainage, retaining walls, new patios and walkways, outdoor living features and planting. Arkland Landscape Construction handles the whole landscape renovation for homes across the San Francisco Bay Area, from the design and estimate to the final walkthrough.

Some yards can't be fixed with new plants. The patio is cracked, water pools after every rain, the slope is creeping, or the space just doesn't work. A renovation starts over where it needs to.

We handle the whole job: demolition, drainage, retaining walls, new hardscape, outdoor living features and the planting that ties it together. Hardscape and patio design is our owner's passion, and it's at the center of what we build.

Who it's for

Homeowners ready to change how the whole yard works, not just how it looks.

What's included

What's included in a landscape renovation?

  • Demolition & removal

Old patios, decks, walls and planting taken out and hauled off before the new work starts.

  • Drainage

Fixes that move water away from your house and out of the yard.

  • Retaining walls

Walls that hold back slopes and create usable, level space.

  • Patios

Pavers, flagstone, bluestone, travertine, tile or concrete, laid out to fit how you use the space.

  • Walkways, driveways & steps

Paths, paver driveways and stairs, including lit steps.

  • Concrete

Patios, paths and steps in plain or stamped concrete.

  • Outdoor kitchens & fire features

BBQ islands, fire pits, fire bowls and outdoor fireplaces.

  • Decks, pergolas & pavilions

Wood decks, pergolas, pavilions, trellises and built-in benches.

  • Fences & gates

Wood fences, horizontal cedar and redwood, and iron fences and gates.

We also build the landscape around pools, spas and hot tubs, and add water features and fountains.

How it works

How does a renovation project work?

  1. Step 1: Consultation

We walk the yard with you, talk about how you want to use it, and note drainage, slope and access.

  2. Step 2: Design & estimate

We design the new layout, or build from your plans, and walk you through materials, options and your estimate.

  3. Step 3: Demo & build

We remove what's going, fix drainage and walls first, then build the hardscape, structures and planting.

  4. Step 4: Final walkthrough

We walk the finished yard with you and make sure every detail is right.

We hired them for building a fence and installing pavers in our backyard and they were great. Always on time, great advice, nice and reasonable prices, we would hire them again and recommend them to our friends!

FAQ

Questions about landscape renovation

How much does a backyard renovation cost in the Bay Area?

A backyard renovation's cost depends mostly on what has to come out and what goes in. Demolition and haul-away, drainage, grading and retaining walls come first, then patios, fire features and planting, and the materials you choose change the price. Arkland prices each renovation after we see the yard at a free consultation, so your estimate reflects your site, not an average.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in California?

You usually do if the wall is over 4 feet tall, measured from the bottom of the footing, or if it holds back a slope, a driveway or another added load. That's the baseline in California's building codes, and some cities are stricter: Woodside requires a permit for every new, replaced or repaired retaining wall. Arkland goes over what your wall needs during the estimate.

How much does a retaining wall cost?

The cost depends on the wall's height, length and material, and on what it takes to build it right. Taller walls can need engineering and a permit, most walls need drainage behind them, and tight access or hard digging adds labor. Arkland builds retaining walls as part of renovations and gives you an estimate after we see the slope and talk through materials with you.

How do I fix poor drainage in my yard?

Find out where the water is going first, then fix the grade or add drainage before anything new is built. Arkland looks at drainage early in every renovation, because new hardscape built on a wet yard won't last. We plan the fix and build it before the new patios, walls and planting go in, so water moves away from your house and out of the yard.

Which patio material is best: pavers, stone or concrete?

The best patio material depends on your style, your budget and how you'll use the space. Arkland builds patios in pavers, flagstone, bluestone, travertine, tile and concrete, including stamped concrete. We walk you through the options during the design and estimate, and we can match walkways, steps and driveways to the patio so the whole yard feels like one design.

Are backyard fire pits legal in the Bay Area?

Yes, but you can't burn wood in a fire pit during a Spare the Air Alert. On alert days, the Bay Area Air District bans burning wood and other solid fuels, indoors and outdoors; the ban doesn't cover gas. Arkland builds fire pits, fire bowls and outdoor kitchens, and we'll help you choose a fuel and a spot that fit your yard and your city's rules.
