Overview

What are landscape enhancements?

Landscape enhancements are upgrades that improve a yard without changing its layout: new planting, outdoor lighting, irrigation repairs and upgrades, turf, mulch and drought-tolerant plants. Arkland Landscape Construction does landscape enhancement work for homes and commercial properties across the San Francisco Bay Area, keeping what's worth saving and fixing what isn't.

Not every yard needs to be torn out. Sometimes the layout works and the problems are smaller: tired planting, dry patches, a broken sprinkler line, no lighting after dark. Enhancements fix those problems and make the space look finished again.

We start with what's worth keeping. Then we add or replace what isn't working, from new planting and drought-tolerant beds to turf, mulch, outdoor lighting and irrigation upgrades.

Joel and his crew did an excellent job redoing my backyard with drought resistant plants. They worked well with the landscape consultant and were patient with my requested changes in the plan. They paid good attention to detail to execute the plan and were always gracious with feedback, suggestions and questions.

FAQ

Questions about landscape enhancements

Is artificial turf worth it in the Bay Area?

It can be, if you want a green lawn without watering or mowing. Artificial turf works well in shade, heavy-use areas and yards with water limits, while natural turf is cooler underfoot and feels like a real lawn. One thing to know: some water-district lawn rebates, including EBMUD's, don't cover artificial turf. Arkland installs both and will go over the options for your yard.

What are the best drought-tolerant plants for the Bay Area?

California natives and other Mediterranean-climate plants are usually the best fit, because they're suited to dry summers and winter rain. The right picks depend on your sun, soil and microclimate, from foggy coastal yards to hot inland ones. Arkland plans drought-tolerant and California-native plantings, with drip irrigation and fresh mulch where they help, so the yard uses less water and still looks finished.

When is the best time to plant in the Bay Area?

Fall is usually the best time to plant in the Bay Area. UC Master Gardeners recommend fall planting, especially for California natives, because cooler weather and winter rain help roots get established before summer. Planting can continue into winter and early spring, as long as the soil isn't soggy. Arkland can plan your planting around the season and shows you how to water new plants.

How much does landscape lighting cost to install?

The cost depends on how many lights you need, the fixtures you choose and how far the wiring has to run. Running wire under existing patios or through finished planting takes more work than adding lights during a rebuild. Arkland looks at where you need light along paths, steps, walls and planting beds, then gives you a lighting plan and an estimate for your yard.

Should I repair or replace my sprinkler system?

Repair it if the system is sound, and upgrade or replace it if it can't water evenly. Many irrigation problems can be fixed with repairs or upgrades instead of a whole new system. Arkland checks the system, looks at how evenly it waters your grass, plants and flowers, and tells you whether a repair, an upgrade or a new install makes the most sense.

Does Arkland offer landscape maintenance?

Yes, we care for residential and commercial landscapes after they're built. Our care work includes lawn care, flower bed maintenance, weed removal, fertilization, pruning, bush trimming, garden cleanup and irrigation maintenance. For commercial properties, we also offer maintenance planning. Ask Arkland about a plan for your property when you call or request an estimate.
