Landscaping in San Mateo County

From the fog of Daly City and Pacifica to the big lots of Hillsborough, Atherton and Woodside, we build and renovate landscapes across San Mateo County.

Where we work

Where does Arkland work in San Mateo County?

Arkland Landscape Construction works in 22 San Mateo County cities and communities, from Daly City and South San Francisco to Redwood City, Menlo Park and Portola Valley, plus Half Moon Bay and the coastside. Our Daly City and Menlo Park locations are both in the county, and five of our published case studies are here, in Hillsborough, San Carlos, San Mateo, South San Francisco and the Atherton–Woodside area.

San Mateo County runs from the city line to the edge of Silicon Valley, and from the bay to the ocean, so its yards vary more than most counties. The north end, Daly City, Brisbane, South San Francisco, San Bruno and Pacifica, is often foggy and windy, with smaller lots and plenty of older concrete to replace.

Along the bay side, Burlingame, San Mateo, Belmont, San Carlos and Redwood City get warmer, sunnier summers, and Foster City sits on flat, low ground near the water. In the hills, Hillsborough, Atherton, Woodside and Portola Valley have larger lots, mature trees, long driveways and gated entries, where a project can cover a motor court, fencing, lawn and planting all at once.

Over the hills, Half Moon Bay, El Granada and Montara face the ocean: cool, damp and windy most of the summer. Plants and materials that do well in Redwood City can struggle there, so we plan coastside jobs on their own terms.

Local conditions

What shapes a San Mateo County landscape?

One county, three climates: the foggy north, the warm bay side and the cool coast. These are the things we plan around.
  • Coast vs. bay side

A short drive takes you from foggy, windy Pacifica to sunny San Carlos. We choose plants, irrigation and surfaces for the side of the hills you live on.

    Landscape Enhancements
  • Large hillside estates

Hillsborough, Atherton and Woodside lots often mean long driveways, motor courts, gates and fencing. We build them as one plan with the planting and lighting.

    New Construction
  • Mature trees

Big oaks and other old trees shape many Peninsula yards. Work near their roots is planned carefully, and some trees are protected by town rules.

    Tree Services
  • Tired concrete and lawns

Many postwar homes in the north and bay-side towns come with cracked concrete and thirsty lawns. A renovation swaps them for new patios, pavers and low-water planting.

Permits and water

What rules apply in San Mateo County?

Each city sets its own permit rules, and the unincorporated areas follow the county's. We check them for your address during the estimate.
  • Retaining walls

Under the state building code, walls over 4 feet from the bottom of the footing, or walls holding up a slope or a driveway, need a permit. Some towns go further: Woodside requires a permit for every new, replaced or repaired retaining wall.

  • Heritage and protected trees

Many towns, including Atherton, Menlo Park and Burlingame, protect large or heritage trees, and removing one usually needs a permit. The county has its own tree rules for unincorporated areas.

  • Water and lawn rebates

Many San Mateo County water agencies are BAWSCA members, and many take part in its Lawn Be Gone! rebate. You apply and get a Notice to Proceed before any grass comes out.

FAQ

San Mateo County landscaping questions

Still have a question? Call (650) 302-4483.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in San Mateo County?

Often, for large trees. Many towns, including Atherton, Menlo Park and Burlingame, protect heritage or other large trees, and removing one usually needs a permit from the town. Unincorporated areas follow the County of San Mateo's own tree rules. Size limits and protected species differ from town to town, so Arkland checks your address before any tree work is planned.

Who issues permits in Emerald Hills, Ladera and the coastside?

The County of San Mateo. Emerald Hills, Ladera, El Granada and Montara are unincorporated, so permits there go through the county's Planning and Building Department instead of a city hall. Coastside properties can also be in the state's coastal zone, where some projects need extra review. Half Moon Bay is a city with its own process. Arkland confirms which office handles your project during the estimate.

How is coastside landscaping different from the bay side of San Mateo County?

It's cooler, windier and damper. Half Moon Bay, El Granada and Montara get ocean fog through much of the summer, plus salt air, so plants that need heat struggle and metal and wood need more care. Bay-side towns like San Carlos and Redwood City are sunnier and warmer. Arkland picks plants, irrigation and materials for whichever side your property is on.

Do you work on large properties in Hillsborough, Atherton and Woodside?

Yes. Our Hillsborough front yard renovation included a paver motor court and an iron gate, and we've built cedar fencing, raised planters and a bluestone patio in the Atherton–Woodside area. Larger lots usually combine driveways, fencing, lawn, planting and lighting in one project, so Arkland plans them together, with tree work handled by our own Tree Services crew.
