Landscaping in Contra Costa County

We build and renovate landscapes in Lamorinda, Walnut Creek and the San Ramon Valley, where hot summers, clay soil and open space shape the yard.

Where we work

Where does Arkland work in Contra Costa County?

Arkland Landscape Construction works in eight Contra Costa County cities and communities: Orinda, Lafayette, Moraga, Walnut Creek, Alamo, Danville, San Ramon and Blackhawk. That covers Lamorinda (Orinda, Lafayette and Moraga), Walnut Creek and the San Ramon Valley.

Once you cross the Caldecott Tunnel, the weather changes. Lamorinda, Walnut Creek and the San Ramon Valley get much hotter, drier summers than the bay side of the hills, and many afternoons are too hot to sit in full sun. Shade, smart irrigation and plants that can take the heat matter more here than anywhere else we work.

Much of the valley floor sits on heavy clay, and many lots in Orinda, Lafayette, Moraga and Alamo are rolling or steep, with oaks and open space behind them. That means grading, drainage and walls are often part of the job, along with defensible space where homes back onto dry grass and brush.

Lots are often larger than in the inner Bay Area, so projects here tend to be bigger, too: pool surrounds, outdoor kitchens, shade structures, lawn swaps and full-yard plans that tie them together, built to look good in August and in January.

Local conditions

What shapes a Contra Costa landscape?

Heat, clay, slopes and open space. These are the things we plan around in central Contra Costa.
  • Summer heat

Pergolas, shade trees, lighter paving that stays cooler underfoot, and drip irrigation make a hot yard usable on summer afternoons.

    Landscape Enhancements
  • Clay and drainage

Valley clay holds winter rain and cracks in summer. We grade the yard, add drains and build a deep base so patios and pool decks stay level.

    Landscape Renovation
  • Rolling and steep lots

Lamorinda and Alamo hillsides often need retaining walls, steps and terraces before there's flat space for a patio or lawn.

    Landscape Renovation
  • Open space and fire

Homes next to grassland and oak woodland need defensible space. We plan spacing, materials and tree work with local fire guidance in mind.

Permits and water

What rules apply in Contra Costa County?

Each city has its own permit and tree rules, and two big water districts serve the area. We check them for your address during the estimate.
  • EBMUD or CCWD

EBMUD serves much of Lamorinda and the San Ramon Valley. Walnut Creek is split between EBMUD and the Contra Costa Water District, which runs its own Lawn to Garden rebate. Check your water bill first.

  • Protected trees

Lafayette, Orinda and Danville all have tree protection rules that cover native oaks and other large trees. Removing one usually needs a city permit.

  • Fire safety

Hillside neighborhoods near open space can fall in mapped fire hazard zones, where California's defensible-space rules and your local fire district's guidance shape planting near the house.

FAQ

Contra Costa County landscaping questions

Still have a question? Call (650) 302-4483.
Is my Contra Costa home on EBMUD or the Contra Costa Water District?

It depends on the address. EBMUD serves much of Orinda, Lafayette, Moraga, Danville and San Ramon, while the Contra Costa Water District serves much of central county, and Walnut Creek is split between the two. Your water bill names your provider. That matters for rebates: EBMUD has its Lawn Conversion Rebate, CCWD its Lawn to Garden rebate, and both need approval before work starts.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Lafayette, Orinda or Danville?

Often, for native oaks and other large trees. Lafayette, Orinda and Danville each have tree protection rules, and removing a protected tree usually needs a city permit, sometimes with an arborist report or replacement planting. Sizes and species differ by city. Arkland checks the rules for your address before planning tree work, and our Tree Services crew handles the removal or pruning once it's approved.

How do you keep a Walnut Creek or Danville backyard usable in summer heat?

With shade first. Arkland adds pergolas, shade trees and covered seating where the afternoon sun hits, uses paving that stays cooler underfoot, and sets up drip irrigation on a smart controller so plants get water without waste. Heat-tolerant, low-water plants handle the summer, and lighting makes the yard useful after sunset, when most hot-weather evenings outside actually happen.
